ADDED 3 AUG - EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Wolverhampton’s Light House Media Centre is well renowned for nurturing creative animation and filmmaking talent and 2007 is no exception with a crop of films produced and directed by ex-Light House trainees and bursary students being selected for some of the UK’s most prestigious festivals. The short films Close at Hand, Romance and The Animal Book, produced as part of UK Film Council’s 2006 Digital Shorts Programme, were screened at Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner earlier this year and have now been snapped up for Edinburgh International Film Festival. Romance was directed by ex Light House trainee Sean Spencer, whilst Close at Hand was produced by Light House producer Urmala Jassal and The Animal Book was co-directed by Chris Randall and Natalie Hinchley who entered Light House’s Animation Bursary scheme in 2005. Burial at Sea, a beautiful stop-motion animated film by Jonathan Reynolds, produced as part of Light House’s Animator in Residence Scheme 2006, has also been selected for Edinburgh Film Festival.

Close at Hand and Romance were chosen by UK Film Council from hundreds of films that were submitted nationally to be screened at Edinburgh International Film Festival as part of the Digital Generation event, showcasing the best of digital filmmaking. Experimental drama Close at Hand which was directed by Jez Alsop and produced by Light House, has also been chosen for the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and so will be making its mark in the UK and across the pond. Romance, written and directed by Sean Spencer, is an understated but uncompromising look at the effects of domestic violence. Sean started out his successful filmmaking career when he attended Light House’s City and Guilds Video Production course back in 1999. He has since produced a number of edgy and distinctive short films that have been screened worldwide catching the attention of high profile organisations such as the British Film Institute and the BBC.

The Animal Book will be showing in competition at this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival alongside competing for the Best Animation Award at London’s Rushes Soho Shorts Festival. The Animal Book is a beautiful animated fairytale setin a mechanical world entirely devoid of animal life, until the arrival of the mysterious ‘animal book’. The stop-motion animation, in a style akin to Tim Burton’s masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas, was co-directed by Natalie Hinchley and Chris Randall, and production took place entirely in Chris’ studio in Digbeth, Birmingham. This film has also been nominated for a Royal Television Society Midlands Award, the gold standard of achievement in the film and television community.
