ME, MY FRIDGE & I By Paul Fuller

Paul Fuller draws on personal experience as the starting point for his photographs. Finding himself living alone for the first time in his life, he began to notice certain patterns in his behaviour and quirky routines. He wondered if he was unusual in his experiences - more often than not he would delay going home, not relishing the thought of cooking for one and knowing the fridge was practically bare.

Paul’s previous experience of the kitchen was an idyllic centre of the home, full of life, where the family came to cook and eat. Paul’s new kitchen was now as cold and empty as his fridge. He set out to find other people who lived alone, for whatever reason, in order to photograph them and their surroundings and interview them about their living situation. He also photographed the contents of their fridges.

Symbolic of domestic bliss, the fridge for Paul gave away details of the people he was meeting. As he met more people he wanted to dispel the stereotype of people living alone as unhappy or miserly. His study of domestic spaces and human behaviour reveals some humorous details about life behind closed doors, but at times reflects on the more difficult issues of living alone.

Thurs 22 May, 6.30-8pm

5 GO SHOOTING IN WOLVERHAMPTON
Wed 30 Apr – Fri 16 May

5 Go Shooting are a group of Black Country photographers who formed their group in late 2007 whilst studying for their photography degrees in Wolverhampton.

- Teresa Crawford-Docherty wears her documentary influences on her sleeve with her gritty representations of Black Country family life.

- Though primarily a street photographer, Gareth Jukes is a prolific image-maker whose work includes a series of digital composites based on historical paintings depicting Gareth in search of an elusive ideal woman.

- David Rann specialises in portraiture. His “Mona Lisa Men” series of studio-taken male portraits digitally combined with enigmatic backgrounds draws on Renaissance painting.

- Dominic Richardson’s surreal but beautiful digital landscapes sit side by side with his well-observed, and often humorous, documentary and travel photographs.

- Katy Rowland is as at home making high quality still life or figure photographs in the studio as she is producing a striking documentary series such as her mixed project based on memories of primary school. top»

STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHY
Wed 21 May - Thurs 5 Jun

Three third year Photography Students from University of Wolverhampton, collaborate to exhibit their work as part of the final year assessment.

- Jay Patel examines the social differences within Mumbai communities, photographing a range of people, their lifestyles and culture and endeavouring to capture the human essence of Mumbai’s inhabitants.

- Stacey Arnett explores fictional snapshot photography’s link to constructing narrative through collective memory. She investigates how visual aesthetics contribute to reading her images as familiar, even when seen for the first time.

- By using long exposures and available light sources, Aisling McClelland’s work hints at alternative ways of seeing and interacting with cities. McClelland’s night time investigation of urban spaces that are usually bustling with people during the day, captures the ‘other worldliness’ of the space when just a hint of human presence remains. top»

STUDENT PHOTOGRAPHY
Wed 11 – Fri 27 Jun

Sandwell College, in partnership with University of Wolverhampton, presents a varied range of photographic work compiled from the projects of final year students studying towards the Higher National Diploma and Higher National Certificate qualifications in Photography and Digital Imaging.

These projects are the culmination of two years of study and span the breadth of photographic practice, from traditional film techniques to cutting edge examples of digital manipulation. This is a unique chance to see the work of the next generation of photographers in the West Midlands and should not be missed by anyone with an interest in the discipline.

GOOD DAY by Sarah Ray
Thurs 1 May – Fri 27 Jun

Sarah Ray’s quirky characters are brought to life with silly conversation and humour using block colours that don’t over complicate. With clients such as Orange and the Artgroup, she also sells her work in galleries and art markets. She is a newly appointed Brummie (originally from the depths of Herefordshire) who hasn’t yet acquired the accent but is picking it up nicely. Other facts about Sarah: likes a nice cup of tea (made in a teapot) and a lovely stroll in the countryside. You can find out more about Sarah’s world at www.sarahray.co.uk. Her work will be for sale in Lock Works for the duration of the exhibition. Sarah will also introduce her exhibition at June’s Out of Hours event. See EVENTS for details.
